What is Kundalini?
Kundalini is a Sanskrit word for a ‘dormant spiritual energy’ believed to lie at the base of the spine, often symbolized as a coiled serpent. The yogic philosophy considers it to be the very primal life force- Shakti, which, when awakened, gets up centrally through the Sushumna Nadi and flows through the seven chakras; awakening to expanded consciousness, inner freedom, and spirit enlightenment.
The sacred discipline enables a person to foster the conscious awakening of this energy: a combination of repetitive asana sequences, breathwork, chanting, mantras, meditation, and kriyas-precise, intentional movements that stir energy from deep within and guide it upward through the chakras.
Kundalini meditation employs mudras, deep breathing, and sound vibration to activate this inner energy, dissolve energy blocks, and open the heart to the divine presence.
These ancient methods do more than just move the body-they uplift awakened energy and consciousness, and bring us back in harmony with ourselves and the universe. When energy finally reaches the seventh chakra (Sahasrara) - the crown - the channel opens to a radiant experience of spiritual clarity, profound peace, and divine connection.
The awakening is not merely physical or energetic; it is deeply transformational, increasing one's intuition, emotional healing, smooth creative flow, and stupendous awareness beyond ego. Traditionally, this path is nurtured through:
- Asanas (or physical postures)
- Pranayama (breathwork)
- Mantras and sound (vibrations)
- Meditation or Dhyana (deep concentration)
- Yogic lifestyle and ethics (Yamas and Niyamas)
Kundalini awakening, given with reverence, is a healing art: the reintegration of one with the divine source within. Ungrounded, it can become very intense and could disorient oneself. Such is why lineage-based teacher trainings, such as at Nirvana Yoga School, are of utmost importance, to give not just technique but also the support and sacred space to rise safely and authentically.
