Chapter 1: Harmonium, Vocal Activation & Kirtan Training

This chapter is designed to help students develop a strong foundation in harmonium playing, vocal expression, and kirtan participation. It brings together melody, voice, and rhythm in a simple and structured way, allowing participants to gradually build confidence in both individual and group settings.

Students are guided step by step—from understanding the basics of sound and notes to playing simple melodies, singing devotional songs, and coordinating both together. By the end of the course, participants experience a natural progression from learning to active musical expression.

What You Will Learn

Harmonium Fundamentals (drop-down)
Students are introduced to the structure and functioning of the harmonium, including proper sitting posture, hand positioning, and bellows control. Emphasis is placed on producing a steady and balanced sound, which forms the foundation of all further learning.

Understanding Swaras (Notes) (drop-down)
The course begins with the basic musical scale (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa), helping students recognize notes, develop pitch awareness, and build familiarity with the keyboard layout.

Scale Practice & Finger Coordination (drop down)
Through guided exercises and simple patterns (alankars), students improve finger movement, accuracy, and confidence while playing.

Introduction to Chords & Harmony (drop-down)
Basic chord structures are taught in an accessible way, allowing students to understand how harmony supports melody in devotional music.

Vocal Activation & Breath Awareness (drop down)
Students learn foundational voice techniques, including breath control, pitch stability, and vocal warm-ups. This helps in developing a natural, relaxed, and sustainable voice.

Special attention is given to the correct pronunciation of Sanskrit sounds, along with breath-aligned chanting practices that support clarity and rhythm.

Bhajan & Kirtan Practice (drop down)
Participants learn simple devotional songs and understand how kirtan works as a group practice. This includes call-and-response singing, maintaining rhythm, and engaging with others musically.

Coordination of Voice & Instrument (drop-down)
A key focus of the course is helping students sing while playing harmonium, developing coordination and confidence.

This chapter focuses on developing a practical understanding of rhythm through the traditional instrument mridangam (drum). It is designed in a way that makes rhythm accessible even to complete beginners, while still offering depth for those with prior experience.

Students learn how rhythm functions within devotional music and how to support singing and harmonium through steady and expressive playing. The course emphasizes hands-on practice, coordination, and group interaction.
